Life after a Shark Tank deal: Fly Babee founder and Janine Allis tell

Business Review Weekly, June 22, 2015

Emma Lovell, the founder of Fly Babee, describes her life since November last year as “a rollercoaster ride”.

In April, viewers of Channel Ten’s Shark Tank saw Boost Juice founder Janine Allis agree to invest $80,000 in Fly Babee, a fledgling business that makes covers for prams and airline bassinets.

But the episode was actually filmed last November and there have been plenty of highs and lows in the intervening months.

5 Reasons why outsourcing is better then employing staff

cplicious – Chris Peters’ Blog, May 31, 2015

Ask anyone who runs a company or start up what’s the hardest part of business and nine times out of ten you will get the answer “people“. Employing people is time consuming, expensive, difficult and can create serious problems, especially if you employ the wrong person. People are human and here in lies the complexities of dealing with them. Emotions, health, personal issues, opinions, beliefs, the list goes on.

By employing people, managing all these human traits is your responsibility and can have a big impact on the day to day dealings of your business. Don’t get me wrong, I strongly believe that good people are what make a great team, and great teams achieve amazing things but in any business there are tasks that no one likes doing. These are the task that if you can, you need to out source.

How to Run a Physical Product Business from Anywhere

Location 180, April 15, 2015

Today’s guest post is from Fred Perrotta of Tortuga Backpacks. I was really excited for Fred to share today because he does something similar, but completely different to what I often write about here on Location 180.

He travels the world, he runs a business, he does the things he wants, but he does it all with a physical product business. Shipwire – Sunnyvale Offices

Office Snapshots, 2015

When Shipwire leased a 31,759 building that had been retrofit for Zero Net Energy, the enterprise shipping logistics company wanted an interior build-out that took advantage of the building’s sustainable design. 100% daylit and 100% naturally ventilated, Shipwire’s offices are powered by integrated rooftop photovoltaics. Operating at an average daily energy load, Shipwire should never incur an electricity bill. The highly sustainable interior build-out designed by RMW architecture & interiors takes advantage of the building’s features by locating individual benched workstations at the perimeter and enclosed collaboration spaces at the core. This allows unimpeded luminous daylight and a flow of air through the operable dynamic windows.

Writer Emergency Pack now in stores, and how online retail works

Kickstarter – Writer Emergency Pack, March 29, 2015

As backers of Writer Emergency Pack, you helped us make something brand new. In December, you received the very first decks—nearly 8,000 of them, shipped by me and my friends out of my garage over the course of one very busy week.

It was exciting, exhausting and unrepeatable.

I knew that when it came time to sell these decks to world outside of Kickstarter, we would need to do it differently. So I asked you for advice. You steered me towards lots of smart people who were happy to answer all of my questions about warehouses and shipping.

Disrupting FedEx: The Startups Unbundling FedEx, UPS and the Logistics Industry

CB Insights, March 13, 2015

Are shipping & logistics titans like FedEx and UPS being unbundled by startups? Drawing inspiration from Andrew Parker & David Haber’s Disaggregation of Craigslist (both of Spark Capital), as well as the Disaggregation of a Bank by Tom Loverro (RRE) and Alexander Pease (Union Square Ventures), we looked at today’s US startups targeting shipping and logistics companies to visualize the Unbundling of FedEx.

The graphic below includes startups like Shyp, which simplifies the process of shipping packages using a mobile platform and a fleet of “Shyp Heroes”, to freight rate comparison products like Pivot Freight, to on demand delivery/courier options such as Postmates and Uber.
